Age Relaxation in Govt Jobs 2026 – OBC 3, SC/ST 5 Years

Quick answer

In central government recruitment, the upper age limit rises by 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer), 5 years for SC/ST and 10, 13 or 15 years for PwBD, as SSC's category table prints it. Ex-servicemen deduct their military service from their age and get 3 more years, while EWS candidates get no age relaxation. Age is counted on the cut-off date in each notice, and every claim needs its own certificate.

Want a quick answer for one exam? Our age calculator with category relaxation takes your date of birth and the cut-off date in the notice. It then adds the OBC, SC/ST or PwBD years for you. Read on for the rules behind it and the cases it does not cover.

Standard relaxations in central recruitment

SSC publishes one table of category codes and the years each category may add to the upper age limit. You can open the SSC table here. Its example date of reckoning is 1 August 2018. That date is out of date, so take the cut-off date from your own notice.

CodeCategoryRelaxation beyond the upper age limit
01SC/ST5 years
02OBC3 years
03PwD10 years
04PwD + OBC13 years
05PwD + SC/ST15 years
06Ex-Servicemen3 years after deducting military service from actual age on the closing date
09 / 10Central Govt civilian employees, Group C, 3 years’ regular and continuous service on the closing dateUp to 40 years (SC/ST: 45)
11Ordinarily domiciled in Jammu & Kashmir, 1 Jan 1980 to 31 Dec 19895 years
12 / 13Widows, divorced women, judicially separated women not remarriedUp to 35 years (SC/ST: 40)
14 / 15Defence personnel disabled in operation during hostilities with a foreign country or in a disturbed area, and released as a result3 years (SC/ST: 8)

The table also covers service clerks in their last year of colour service (up to 45, SC/ST 50). Retrenched census employees of the Registrar General of India get their own row. The table has no row for riot victims.

DoPT’s own rule matches the first two rows. Para 3.3 of its reservation brochure adds 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC. EWS gets nothing extra. DoPT’s EWS FAQs of 19 September 2022 settle it in Question 28 (page 6). EWS candidates follow the General rules on age.

Each notice prints only the rows that apply to its posts. The SSC CHSL 2026 table has no Jammu & Kashmir row, for example. The SSC SI 2026 table has no PwBD row. Dates can differ too. SSC’s table deducts military service from age on the closing date, while CHSL 2026 uses 1 August 2026.

How to count your age on the cut-off date

Every notice fixes one date for age. SSC calls it the date for age reckoning. Your age on that date decides eligibility, whatever the day you apply.

SSC CHSL 2026 puts it at 1 August 2026 and gives the limit as 18 to 27 years. Para 5.1 turns that into dates. You must be born not before 2 August 1999 and not later than 1 August 2008.

Trust those printed dates over your own subtraction. A candidate born on 1 August 1999 turns 27 on the cut-off date, yet falls outside that range. Our age calculator follows the same rule.

Subtraction is where people slip. One UPSC aspirant wrote on Careers360:

“My date of birth is 24th September 1990. OBC -Non creamy layer. Can I apply upsc civil service exam prelims 2026? As I already turned 35 in September 2025. Please help as I am getting contradictory answers.” (Careers360, January 2026)

The two replies on that page, both posted on 8 January 2026, reach opposite answers. Use exact dates instead. First find the cut-off date in the notice. Move its “born not before” date back by your relaxation years. Then compare your birth date with the new range.

Here is that method applied to the question. The UPSC CSE 2026 notice (page 12) sets 21 to 32 on 1 August 2026. You must be born not earlier than 2 August 1994.

OBC adds 3 years, which moves that date to 2 August 1991. A birth date of 24 September 1990 is earlier, so OBC relaxation alone does not make this candidate eligible. The reply marked as accepted on Careers360 says the opposite.

SSC takes your date of birth from your Matriculation or Secondary certificate (CHSL para 5.3). It will not change it later. SSC checks your category against a different date. By the closing date for applications, you must already be SC, ST, OBC, PwBD or ex-serviceman (para 6.4).

Do relaxations add up?

Only where the notice says so. SSC prints the combined PwBD figures (13 and 15 years) as separate codes. Outside these, every recruiter writes its own rule:

RecruiterCombination rule as printed
IBPS RRB XVSC/ST/OBC relaxation combines with only one other relaxation (note on page 8)
SBI Junior Associate 2026No cumulative relaxation, within its list or with any other item (page 3)
UPPSC RO/ARO 2026Only one concession, whichever helps you more (pages 2 and 4)
CRPF sports quota 2026Adds the category years to the sports years and prints the sums, such as 05+03 = 08 (page 9)

Using a relaxation also changes the seats you compete for. DoPT’s FAQ on SC/ST/OBC reservation (Question 5) deals with candidates selected on a relaxed standard, including age. They count against reserved vacancies and cannot fill unreserved ones.

Which certificate proves each claim

ClaimProof named in the official files
Date of birthMatriculation or Secondary certificate
SC/STCaste certificate in the Annexure-IX format. Issuers include the District Magistrate, SDM and revenue officers not below Tehsildar (CHSL pages 67 to 68)
OBC (non-creamy layer)Central OBC format (CHSL Annexure-X, page 69). It certifies a central-list caste and no creamy layer. The same authorities that issue SC/ST certificates sign it
PwBDDisability certificate in Form-V or Form-VI for a benchmark disability of 40% or more (CHSL page 54, Annexures XI and XII on pages 70 to 72)
Ex-servicemenUndertaking with your service dates (Annexure-VIII), discharge certificate, or the serving personnel certificate (Annexure-VII) if you are still in service (CHSL para 16.5.6)
Central Govt employeeAnnexure-VI certificate from your Head of Office, showing 3 years’ regular service on the closing date (CHSL page 64)
Widow, divorced or separated womanThe notice asks for the “relevant certificate” (para 16.5.7) and names no specific document

SSC does not insist on an OBC certificate issued before the closing date. On that date, you must still be OBC and outside the creamy layer (CHSL para 6.5). Your OBC claim stays provisional until the appointing authority checks it. Our guide to the EWS and OBC-NCL certificate covers the format and issuing office.

Worked examples from current notices

IBPS RRB Office Assistant18 to 28 on 1 Sep 2026Up to 31Up to 33PwBD 10; widows up to 35 (OBC 38, SC/ST 40)

The OBC and SC/ST columns are our arithmetic: base limit plus the printed years. Each one also moves the earliest birth date. For CHSL, OBC candidates can be born as early as 2 August 1996.

Check the printed dates even in official notices. CRPF gives 1 August 2026 as the cut-off date. Its birth-date window, though, reads 2 January 2003 to 1 January 2008 (page 9). Those dates do not match a 1 August cut-off, so confirm with CRPF before you rely on them.

Take an ex-serviceman for CHSL who is 41 on 1 August 2026 and served 12 years. By our arithmetic, his age after deduction is 29. That is within 27 plus 3 years, so he meets the age rule. SSC SI counts the same deduction from age on the closing date of the application instead.

DoPT’s ex-servicemen FAQs (Question 5) cover Group A and B posts too. Outside UPSC’s all-India exams, the limit rises by your military service plus 3 years. Through a UPSC all-India exam, the relaxation is at most 5 years.

That 5-year relaxation needs at least 5 years of military service. You must also have been released on completing your assignment, or for a disability from military service.

Some ex-servicemen already hold a central Group C or D job. They keep the age relaxation for a higher Group C or D grade. They lose the ex-servicemen reservation (Question 6).

States and banks use their own tables

State commissions start from their own service rules. UPPSC RO/ARO 2026 runs from 21 to 40 years on 1 July 2026. Its category, sports, disability and ex-army relaxations apply only to candidates of U.P. domicile. SC, ST, OBC or EWS candidates from other states get none of them (pages 2 and 4).

UPSSSC’s JE advertisement (page 11) likewise reserves posts for Uttar Pradesh’s own SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates. The UPPSC figures also differ from the central ones. U.P.’s SC, ST and OBC candidates all get 5 years. Its disabled candidates get 15 years, up to a maximum age of 55 (page 3).

Banks write their own lists too. The SBI Junior Associate 2026 advertisement adds a row for trained SBI apprentices. They get 1 year (Gen/EWS), 4 (OBC), 6 (SC/ST) and 11, 14 or 16 for PwBD.

That apprentice relaxation applies only if your engagement began on or after 1 January 2022. You also need one year of branch experience by 31 August 2026. You must have passed the trade test and hold the joint apprenticeship certificate.

SBI’s widow rule is 7 years, capped at 35, 38 or 40. SSC’s table has no apprentice row, and its widow row has no OBC figure.

DoPT has rebuilt its website, and old file links under dopt.gov.in/sites/default/files now return a 404 error. The DoPT files cited here come from its new document store.

Frequently asked questions

How much age relaxation do OBC candidates get in central government jobs?

OBC candidates of the non-creamy layer get 3 years over the upper age limit. You must not fall in the creamy layer on the closing date of the application, and you need an OBC certificate in the central format.

Do EWS candidates get age relaxation?

No. DoPT's EWS FAQs of 19 September 2022 say the General category rules on age and number of attempts also apply to EWS candidates.

Can I add two relaxations together?

Only where the notice prints the combination. SSC prints PwBD (OBC) as 13 years and PwBD (SC/ST) as 15. SBI allows no cumulative relaxation, and UPPSC gives only the one concession that helps you most.

How is the ex-servicemen age relaxation worked out?

For Group C and D posts, deduct your actual military service from your actual age. If the result does not exceed the post's upper age limit by more than 3 years, you meet the age condition.

Which date of birth does SSC accept?

SSC goes by the date of birth in your Matriculation or Secondary Examination certificate, entered the same way in the online form. It does not accept a later request to change it.

On which date is my age counted?

On the cut-off date printed in each notice. SSC CHSL 2026 and SSC SI 2026 count age on 1 August 2026, SBI Junior Associate on 1 April 2026 and IBPS RRB XV on 1 September 2026.
