About MPESB and this recruitment

The Madhya Pradesh Employees Selection Board (MPESB) runs written recruitment tests for state departments from Chayan Bhawan in Bhopal. For this drive, it works for the Police Headquarters under the Home (Police) Department.

The rulebook limits MPESB’s role to the written exam and its result. The police department runs the physical test, the trade test and document checks. MPESB combines the later results only if the department asks.

Only men can apply. The footer of the rulebook calls this the Group-5 recruitment test 2026.

Vacancies by unit and category

The 1,000 posts sit in two units. The Special Armed Force (SAF) has 200 and the district police force has 800. The tables below copy page 3 of the rulebook.

SAF (200)URUR 13% notionalSCSTOBCOBC 13% provisionalEWSTotal

Home Guard (15%)32161924171612120
Total21610412816011210480800

Read the 13% columns with care. The UR 13% notional and OBC 13% provisional columns show the same posts, so count them once. The rulebook splits each unit into 87% and 13% posts. SAF has 174 + 26, and the district police has 696 + 104.

Candidates without MP domicile can apply only for unreserved open posts. The board can raise or cut the number of posts.

The rulebook gives no district-wise count. Instead, you rank 58 units by preference: 55 districts and the Government Railway Police at Indore, Jabalpur and Bhopal. The police will not post you to your home district. You must also serve at least 5 years in your first unit before you can ask for a transfer.

The pay scale is ₹19,500 to ₹62,000. In the first three years you get a stipend of 70%, 80% and 90% of the minimum pay. Appointment is on 3 years’ probation.

Eligibility and driving licence

CategoryEducation
UR, SC, OBCClass 10 under the 10+2 system, or Higher Secondary or equivalent
STClass 8 or equivalent

On top of this, every candidate needs a driving licence for a heavy vehicle. The rulebook does not say how long you must have held it. It also prints no expiry rule. It does ask for all required certificates by 29 October 2026, though that rule does not name the licence.

You need the licence and must also pass a separate practical trade test.

Other conditions: you must be an Indian citizen.

Do you have more than two living children? Then you are not eligible if one was born on or after 26 January 2001. A later birth of twins, when one child was living, does not count against you.

Government employees need prior permission from their appointing authority to sit the exam. If selected, they must submit a resignation accepted by their old employer.

Age limit and relaxation

You must be at least 18 and not over the upper limit on 29 October 2026. Check your date with our age calculator for government jobs.

Candidate (men)Upper age
MP unreserved, MP EWS, other-state candidates33
MP SC, ST, OBC*38
Government, corporation and board employees, Nagar Sainik*38
Inter-caste marriage awardees*38
Unreserved Vikram Award winners*33 + 5 = 38
Reserved Vikram Award winners*38 + 5 = 43

*MP domicile only. Other-state candidates get no relaxation in any case.

Ex-servicemen deduct their defence service from their age. The result may not exceed the limit by more than 3 years. Retrenched MP government staff can deduct up to 7 years of temporary service on the same 3-year cap.

If you fit more than one basis, you get the single best one. Incentive relaxations such as the Vikram Award still add to general ones, as the table shows.

Physical standards and medical

Unit and groupHeightChest (unexpanded / expanded)
SAF: UR, OBC168 cm79 / 84 cm
SAF: Gorkha, Garhwali, Kumaoni157 cm79 / 84 cm
SAF: Maratha, SC, ST165 cm79 / 84 cm
District police: UR, SC, OBC168 cm81 / 86 cm
District police: ST160 cm76 / 81 cm

Your chest must expand by at least 5 cm. The rulebook allows no relaxation in these standards at any stage.

A district medical board checks your eyes too. You need 6/9 in one eye and 6/12 in the other, without glasses, and no eye disease. You must also tell the main colours apart. Knock knees and flat feet lead to rejection.

Each right answer earns 1 mark. Wrong or skipped answers lose nothing. The questions follow the MP Board Class 8 level. Para 9 says the questions are in Hindi. Para 2.32 mentions Hindi and English medium.

ShiftReportingInstructionsExam

Second1:00–2:00 pm2:50–3:00 pm3:00–5:00 pm

Because the exam runs in many shifts, MPESB uses Normalised Equi-Percentile scaling. Big normalised scores have caused anger before. That was a different MPESB exam, the Van and Jail Recruitment Test 2023. After its result, a protest leader told PTI:

"a candidate has scored more than the total marks due to the normalisation process." (Outlook India, 17 December 2024)

For this exam, chapter 2 of the rulebook sets out the method. Your percentile comes from your own shift and becomes a T-score. Ties go first to proportionate marks, then to the older candidate. Some priority groups, such as NCC “C” certificate holders, get 5% extra on their written marks.

Physical test, trade test and selection

The board ranks each vertical category by percentile and calls seven times its posts to stage two. SAF and district police share one cut-off. Everyone level with the cut-off also gets a call, even if the total crosses seven times.

Stage two has three parts. You run 800 metres once for up to 40 marks and take a driving trade test. The police department also checks your original documents.

800 m time (seconds)Marks
Over 198.30
Over 183.1 to 185.08 (printed minimum)
Over 124.2 to 126.139
124.2 or less40

Home Guards and ex-servicemen get a slower table: over 208.5 to 210.5 seconds earns the minimum 8 marks. The rulebook wording on the pass mark is unclear. It mentions both 20% and 30%, but writes “8 out of 40”. Aim well clear of 185 seconds.

The trade test is qualifying only. The rulebook gives no format, vehicle type or marks for it.

Paras 10 and 19(i) base the final merit on your written-exam percentile. You must first clear the run and the trade test.

Paras 15(ii) and 19(iii) speak of total marks instead. Chapter 2 adds the T-score to the physical score. Wait for MPESB’s result notice for the method it applies. If an original certificate fails the check, you are out, even after passing both stages.

Para 14 adds a separate rule for Home Guards. It says they are exempt from the written exam for constable posts. Service marks are 5 for up to 5 years and 10 for 5 to 10 years. Over 10 years earns 15.

Their final selection adds these to their physical marks. The Home Guard rows in the written-exam tables sit oddly with this rule.

Admit card and next steps

  1. Finish any correction on the MPOnline portal by 3 November 2026.
  2. Keep your online application number safe. You need it to download the admit card from esb.mp.gov.in.
  3. Download it when MPESB posts it. The board sends nothing by post, and has not given a date yet.
  4. On exam day, carry the admit card and a black ballpoint pen. Add one original photo ID: voter ID, PAN, Aadhaar, driving licence or passport. Page 17 also allows an officially issued, signed marksheet with your photo.
  5. Bring your Aadhaar card or number too, and keep Aadhaar biometrics unlocked. MPESB checks fingerprints at entry and during the exam.

Pages 1 and 27 accept e-Aadhaar only if UIDAI verifies it. Page 17 says e-Aadhaar is not valid. Carry a physical ID to stay safe. Gates close at the end of reporting time.

After the exam, MPESB opens an objection link for 3 days. Each challenged question costs ₹150 plus other charges.

MP SC, ST and OBC candidates who want travel fare should bring the first page of their bank passbook. More openings are on our police and defence jobs page. For a recent big police result, see the UP Police Constable final result.
