About SSC

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) works under the Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions. Its headquarters sits in the CGO Complex on Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

Through CHSL, SSC fills Group C clerical and data entry posts. These posts sit in central ministries, departments, constitutional bodies and tribunals. Regional offices across the country manage the exam centres in their states.

Exam date and next steps

Applications closed on 7 October 2026. Your next step is Tier-I, a computer based exam (CBE). SSC’s notice of 1 October 2026 gives 30 November to 31 December 2026 as the proposed dates. The CHSL notice (para 13.5) calls its exam schedule tentative, so SSC can still change it.

Some coaching sites print release dates for the city slip and admit card. SSC has not announced them. Plan around the two timing rules in the notice instead, counted from your own exam date.

Vacancies

The notice gives one figure: approximately 2,536 tentative vacancies. SSC has not yet split them by post or category. It says the updated post-wise and category-wise list will appear later under Candidate’s Corner, Tentative Vacancy, on ssc.gov.in. SSC also says it does not collect state-wise or zone-wise vacancies. For that, you have to ask the user departments.

For comparison, SSC’s final result for CHSL 2025 (7 October 2026) lists 3,522 vacancies.

You need Class 12 or an equivalent pass from a recognised board or university. DEO posts in three offices ask for more. They sit in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, SSC itself and the Ministry of Culture. These want Class 12 Science with Maths. Your result must have come out by 7 October 2026.

Only men are eligible for any BRO vacancies (para 4.4). LDC in BRO also has extra physical and medical standards, set out in Annexure-XVI (para 15.4).

The age limit is 18 to 27 years on 1 August 2026. In plain dates, you must be born between 2 August 1999 and 1 August 2008 (both dates included).

SC/ST candidates get 5 extra years and OBC candidates 3. PwBD candidates get 10 years, PwBD (OBC) 13 and PwBD (SC/ST) 15. Para 5.2 of the notice lists these other relaxations:

Want to check your exact age on the cut-off date? Our age calculator with category relaxation does it in a few seconds. For the rules behind the extra years, read how category age relaxation works.

SSC takes your date of birth from your Class 10 certificate. It will not accept a later request to change it.

Fee (as it was)

The application fee was ₹100, payable online by BHIM UPI, net banking or debit card until 8 October 2026. Women, SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen eligible for reservation paid nothing. SSC does not refund the fee. Corrections during the October window cost ₹200 for the first and ₹500 for the second, for every candidate.

City slip and admit card steps

SSC official website ssc.gov.in Notice Board filtered to CHSL, listing the CHSL 2025 final result and the CHSL 2026 notice

SSC releases two separate things. The city slip tells you the exam city and date. The Admission Certificate (admit card) carries your roll number and venue details. You must bring it to the exam.

  1. Go to ssc.gov.in and log in with your registration number and password.
  2. About 10 days before your exam, open the exam city details for CHSL 2026. Note the city and date, then book travel.
  3. Two to three days before your exam, download the Admission Certificate from the same login.
  4. Print it. Check your name, date of birth and photo against your ID proof.

Forgot your password, or need to fix your photo or details? Our guide to OTR password recovery and edit rules covers both.

A far-off exam city is a common worry, and candidates ask every cycle whether SSC will change it. One candidate asked on Careers360 about an earlier CHSL exam (held 12 to 26 October that year):

"sir SSC CHSL ka exam jo 12-26 oct. ke beech me hone vala h uske center change hoge kya , aur agr hoge to kb tak me ?" (Careers360 Q&A)

The CHSL 2026 notice answers it plainly. SSC will not consider a request to change your centre at any stage.

If your details are missing one week before the exam, contact your Regional Office with proof that you applied. Quote your registration number, roll number, email ID and mobile number in any message. SSC ignores messages without them. The SSC JE admit card guide shows the same login steps for a live exam.

Tier-I and Tier-II exam pattern

Tier-I has four parts of 25 questions each, worth 2 marks per question. You get 60 minutes, with a 15-minute timer per part. Scribe-eligible candidates get 80 minutes. Each wrong answer costs 0.50 marks.

Tier-I partQuestionsMarks
English Language (Basic Knowledge)2550
General Intelligence2550
Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic Skill)2550
General Awareness2550
Total100200

Parts II, III and IV come in English, Hindi and the language you chose in the form. Some guides say all four parts appear in regional languages. The notice offers that choice for Parts II to IV only.

Tier-II takes one day in two sessions. Session I runs 2 hours 15 minutes. Wrong answers in Sections I to III cost 1 mark each.

Tier-II sectionQuestionsMarksTime
I: Mathematical Abilities + Reasoning and General Intelligence30 + 301801 hour
II: English Language and Comprehension + General Awareness40 + 201801 hour
III: Computer Knowledge Test (qualifying)154515 minutes
IV: Skill Test (DEO) or Typing Test (LDC/JSA) (qualifying)Data entry / typing passageQualifying only15 or 10 minutes

LDC/JSA typing needs 35 words a minute in English or 30 in Hindi. Hindi typists must use the Mangal font. You need 30% (UR), 25% (OBC/EWS) or 20% (others) in Tier-I and in Tier-II Sections I to III. The final merit list adds up Sections I and II of Tier-II only.

DEO candidates take a skill test instead. In the three para 8.1 offices, DEO and DEO Grade ‘A’ need 15,000 key depressions per hour.

That test lasts 15 minutes, on an English passage of about 3,700 to 4,000 key depressions. Other DEO posts need 8,000 key depressions per hour. Their 15-minute passage has about 2,000 to 2,200. Scribe-eligible candidates get 20 minutes.

Documents for exam day

What you carry depends on how you registered:

  • Aadhaar-authenticated candidates bring a printout of the Admission Certificate. The notice says they need no photographs or photo ID at the venue.
  • Even so, para 24(r) tells all candidates to bring two photos and an original photo ID. Carry them anyway, along with anything your admit card lists.
  • Everyone else brings the admit card printout, two recent passport-size colour photos and an original photo ID. The date of birth on the ID must match your admit card.
  • Accepted photo IDs include an Aadhaar card or e-Aadhaar printout, voter ID, driving licence, PAN and passport. A university, college or school ID also works. So does a Govt/PSU employer ID or the ESM Discharge Book from the Ministry of Defence. Any photo ID from the Central or State Government is fine too.
  • Does your ID lack a date of birth? Add an original proof, such as your Class 10 certificate or birth certificate.
  • Candidates using a scribe also need the medical certificate, the undertaking and a photocopy of the scribe’s ID.

Important instructions

  • If you skipped Aadhaar authentication, report two hours before your exam starts.
  • A date of birth mismatch between your admit card and ID means you cannot sit the exam.
  • Keep phones, Bluetooth devices and other gadgets out of the hall. SSC can ban you for 3 to 5 years.
  • After Tier-I, SSC posts the tentative answer key. A challenge costs ₹50 per question.
  • SSC does not re-check or re-evaluate scores at any tier.
