About SSC and this exam
The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) works under the Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions. Its headquarters sits in the CGO Complex on Lodhi Road, New Delhi.
The Junior Engineer Examination 2026 fills Group ‘B’ posts at Level 6 (₹35,400 to 1,12,400). They sit in central departments such as CPWD, MES, BRO and the Central Water Commission. The same exam also recruits Scientific Assistants (SA) for the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Exam dates and status
On 1 October 2026 SSC proposed 2 to 6 November for Paper-I. The corrigendum of 26 October kept that window and added a second one, 30 November to 1 December. SSC calls both “revised proposed dates”. The JE notice (para 13.19) still lets SSC change them. Any change will appear only on its website.
| Stage | Date | Status (3 November 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Paper-I: Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and IMD SA (CS & IT, E&T, Physics) | 2 to 6 November 2026 | Under way |
| Exam city, Telecom batch | 8–10 days before 30 November | Awaited |
| Paper-I: JE (Telecommunication) | 30 November and 1 December 2026 | Proposed |
| Paper-II (CBE) | December 2026 | Tentative, per the exam notice |
Your own date and shift appear only in your login. SSC has not published a shift-wise timetable. You may see reporting and gate-closing times on other sites. SSC notices give no such times, apart from one rule. Candidates without Aadhaar authentication must report two hours before the start (para 15.7). For everything else, go by your admit card.
City slip and admit card steps

SSC does not post or email admit cards (para 15.3). The city details and the admit card both come through the candidate login on ssc.gov.in, the SSC (HQ) website.
- Open ssc.gov.in and log in with your registration number and password. Lost the password? The SSC one-time registration guide explains the account.
- Check your exam city details. SSC made them live for the six papers on 23 October.
- About 2 to 3 days before your date, download the Admission Certificate from the same login.
- Print it, and keep a second copy, as para 15.6 advises.
- Check the name, date of birth, subject and photo against your ID.
The two notices give different windows. The 23 October notice says 2 to 3 days. The September notice says 3 to 4 days (para 15.6). Start looking four days before your exam.
Telecom candidates wait longer. SSC will open their exam city 8 to 10 days ahead of 30 November. By our count, that means around 20 to 22 November. SSC has not given an exact date.
Can’t see your details one week before your exam? Contact your SSC Regional Office at once with proof that you applied (para 15.4). If you don’t, you lose any claim. Quote your registration ID, email, mobile number, name, date of birth and the exam name. SSC ignores messages without them (para 15.5).
Two deadlines from the city notice have passed. Own-scribe candidates had to map their scribe’s OTR by 27 October 2026 (11 PM). SSC issues the scribe’s Entry Pass only after that mapping.
Some candidates who chose Telecom also applied for SA. SSC gave them EC/TC as the default SA subject. They could switch to CS/IT or Physics until the same deadline. Now you must write the subject printed on your admit card.
Vacancies
The September notice gave 1,748 tentative vacancies. SSC’s post-wise list of 8 October 2026 adds up to 1,699. That figure includes the IMD Scientific Assistant and Telecom posts. SSC has not explained the gap of 49. Both figures are tentative.
| Post group | Tentative vacancies (8 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|
| JE (Civil) | 867 |
| JE (Electrical) | 108 |
| JE (Mechanical) | 10 |
| JE (Electrical & Mechanical) | 183 |
| JE (Telecom), Department of Telecommunications | 69 |
| Scientific Assistant, IMD | 462 |
| Total | 1,699 |
BRO vacancies are open to men only. SSC says it does not collect state-wise or zone-wise figures.
Paper-I and Paper-II pattern
Paper-I is qualifying. Every candidate answers General Intelligence & Reasoning and General Awareness, plus the one subject chosen in the form.
| Paper | Sections | Questions / marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper-I (CBE) | Reasoning 50, General Awareness 50, your subject (Part A to G) 100 | 200 / 200 | 2 hours |
| Paper-II (CBE) | Your subject (Part A to G) | 100 / 300 | 2 hours |
Scribe-eligible candidates get 2 hours 40 minutes for each paper. Questions come in Hindi and English only. A wrong answer costs 0.25 marks in Paper-I and 1 mark in Paper-II.
You need 30% (UR), 25% (OBC/EWS) or 20% (other categories) in both papers. SSC shortlists for Paper-II category-wise, on normalised Paper-I marks. It draws separate lists for Civil, Electrical & Mechanical, SA and Telecom.
Marks are normalised across shifts. Electrical and Mechanical scores are also normalised against each other, and so are the three SA subjects. Final merit uses normalised Paper-II marks alone, along with your post preferences (paras 18.1 to 18.6).
What to carry on exam day
- The printed Admission Certificate, for every candidate.
- Aadhaar-authenticated candidates need no photographs or photo ID (paras 10.3 and 15.8). Still carry any other document your admit card lists (para 15.10).
- Without Aadhaar authentication, bring two recent passport-size colour photos. You also need an original photo ID that shows the date of birth printed on your admit card. Report two hours before the start time.
- Para 15.7 accepts a voter ID, driving licence, PAN card or passport. A school or college ID, an employer ID or the ESM Discharge Book also works. So does any Central or State Government photo ID.
- Does the ID lack a date of birth? Add an original proof of it (para 15.8). Examples are your matriculation certificate, a CBSE, ICSE or State Board marks sheet, or a birth certificate. A mismatch means you cannot sit the exam.
- Scribe users also bring the medical certificate, the undertaking and a photocopy of the scribe’s photo ID. Without them, SSC will not let you sit the exam (para 15.9).
Rules inside the exam lab
Leave your phone, Bluetooth earphones and any other gadget outside. Carrying one into the hall cancels your candidature. It also brings a 3 to 5 year ban from SSC exams (para 21.1). Don’t bring a calculator either. The screen offers a scientific calculator. The IS 456:2000 and steam tables sit under “Useful Data” when a question needs them.
A frozen screen or dead mouse is a real worry. It happened in other SSC exams in 2025. A candidate in the Selection Post Phase 13 exam told Careers360:
"My mouse wasn't working for two to three minutes and I couldn't access the exam properly." (Careers360 News, 8 August 2025)
SSC’s advisory of 7 September 2026 covers this case. Don’t restart or shut down the computer, and don’t swap the monitor yourself. Report the problem at once to the invigilator or centre staff. They will assess it and act. Handling the system yourself can lead to action against you.
SSC also checks logs, photos, biometrics and CCTV footage after the exam (para 18.20). Unfair means found later can still cancel your candidature and bar you from future exams.
After Paper-I
SSC will post tentative answer keys on its website. A challenge costs ₹50 per question, online only, and the fee is not refunded. SSC does not re-check or re-evaluate scores at any stage.
Shortlisted candidates move to Paper-II, tentatively in December. Other SSC exams run in the same weeks. Our SSC SI Delhi Police and CAPF exam page and CHSL 2026 schedule list their dates. Hold a UP PET-2025 score card too? The UPSSSC Mechanical and Electrical JE posts take applications until 25 and 27 November.
